Haleigh Cox was born a healthy, happy baby girl in 2009. Unfortunately, at eight months old she experienced a seizure, after which her parents, Janea and Brian, received heartbreaking news. Haliegh had cerebral palsy and intractable epilepsy that was expected to get worse. Her treatments began with experimental cord blood infusions, which helped at first, but the seizures eventually came back as infantile spasms—a rare, and even more dangerous, seizure disorder.

By the age of three, Haleigh had been diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, another rare form of childhood epilepsy, as well as a mitochondrial disorder, and type one diabetes. She was taking a lengthy list of medications, including Onfi, Depakote, Banzel, Valium, Vigabatrin, and Klonopin, and in three short years had tried countless failed medications and therapies. Even with all of the medicine, Haliegh suffered over 200 seizures a day and frequently stopped breathing, which eventually resulted in a two-month PICU stay where her parent’s received another grim diagnosis—Haleigh only had a few months to live.

With this heartbreaking news, Haleigh’s parents recounted everything they had tried, from specialized diets to hyperbaric chamber therapy. Then, Janea suggested one last option she had read about online—CBD. With this last shred of hope, The Cox family relocated to Colorado in order to gain access to this hemp-based medication that was going viral for its ability to help childhood epilepsy.
